Welcome to the Friends of Hales Place Chapel, a community group dedicated to restoring and promoting the Belvedere Chapel on the Hales Place Estate in Canterbury.

Converted in the 19th Century from an old Belvedere, the building was originally used as a general chapel before being redesignated by the resident Jesuits as a mortuary chapel. After the Jesuits left in the 1920s, the chapel was handed over to the local Roman Catholic parish but fell into disrepair.

Now in 2026, a century after the Chapel stopped being used regularly and with a housing estate built around it, a new Friends group has been formed to restore and maintain the Chapel. Canterbury District Council have already embarked on an ambitious program to restore the exterior, and the Friends of Hales Place Chapel are now looking to bring the interior back to its former glory.
